Shown here, the January 8th Shreveport Times ad for the Louisiana Hayride. It might have been his 20th birthday, but January 8th, 1955 was not a day off for the future King of Rock and Roll. Elvis, Scotty, and Bill had just played a show in Midland, Texas the day before and they were putting plenty of miles on Scotty's wife Bobbie's 1953 Chevrolet, which wound up being a point of contention for Scotty later, as Scotty felt that Elvis, who was known for handing out free cars long before Oprah, could have offered to replace the car that they wore out crisscrossing the South on Elvis' rise to fame.
As you can see here, the home of the Hayride, the famous Shreveport Municipal Auditorium, is still standing and largely unchanged despite the years. You can find more information about the Auditorium and Elvis' first show on the Hayride by clicking here, and you can find all of his previous Hayride performances by clicking the dropdown menu at the top right corner of this page.
