To put it mildly, November 6th was a big day for Elvis. He was back in Shreveport for his third appearance on the Louisiana Hayride, and on this date, he would famously sign a year-long contract with the show. Vernon and Gladys were in attendance for the big moment and signed as well, due to Elvis' young age. Elvis would get $18 per show, while Scotty and Bill would get $12 each. Adjusted for inflation, Elvis' pay would be about $211 today, not bad for a kid who'd been driving a truck in October.

Six years ago to the day, Elvis left Milam Junior High with a farewell song to his classmates and moved to Memphis. The Presleys had few possessions, little money, and bounced from one low-rent home to the next while they tried to build a life in Memphis. If you'd told them that within six years their only son would be making records, singing on the radio, and pulling down $200 a gig, they'd have probably thought you were crazy, but the Presley arc was just getting started.
