November 6, 1954 - Southern Maid Donut Co., Shreveport LA

Elvis famously developed a predilection for Southern Maid Donuts while in Shreveport for his Louisiana Hayride appearances. The first store opened on the corner of Greenwood Street and Hearne Avenue in 1937, and a franchise location soon followed at 1922/24 Texas Avenue.

The purpose of this site is to document the venues where Elvis performed and whether or not they still exist, so technically Southern Maid doesn't belong here, but Elvis did frequent the establishment and he performed a commercial jingle hawking their donuts during his October 6th Hayride show, so we're giving Southern Maid a pass.

I'm still investigating, but it seems Elvis would visit the Texas Avenue location because it was closer to the Municipal Auditorium, home of the Hayride, though he could have also gone to the original shop as well considering the number of times he played in Shreveport.

The picture above was taken before Elvis' tenure on the Hayride, but shows the Texas Avenue location as it would have looked when he was there. I believe the building is gone; a google maps search of 1922 or 1924 Texas Avenue takes you here (photo below) and to me the location seems off. I don't know if the street was renumbered at some point or if it is actually the correct spot.
Southern Maid was a big sponsor of the Hayride, which is likely how Elvis first encountered them. On the 6th, they offered him a free dozen donuts to sing a jingle on the show, and Elvis obliged with the one and only commercial of his entire career:
"You can get them piping hot after 4 p.m., you can get them piping hot, Southern Maid Donuts hits the spot, you can get them piping hot after 4 p.m."
