September 25, 1954 - Eagle's Nest, Memphis TN

Saturday the 25th, Elvis and friends were back at the Eagle's Nest. Having just played there the night before, this would be Elvis' fifth documented appearance at the Eagle's Nest. There are varied accounts of just how many Eagle's Nest shows Elvis played in total, but I'm following Scotty Moore's timeline because he would have been there for all of them.

Elvis, Scotty, and Bill would play between sets at the Eagle's Nest much like they had done in July at the Bon Air Club. According to scottymoore.net, "the young people hanging out at the pool would rush in to hear Elvis and then go back outside when the main act came on". You can read more about the Eagle's Nest venue and the Clearpool complex by clicking here.

The photo above is attributed to the Eagle's Nest in September of 1954, but I don't have the specific date. It shows Elvis holding hands with a woman identified as Maureen Hunter Kesler, wife of Stan Kesler.

Stan Kesler was an influential Memphis musician and producer who would co-write the Elvis hits I'm Left, Your Right, She's Gone and I Forgot to Remember to Forget. Maureen has proven more elusive, and she's not mentioned in Stan Kesler's obituary, though his daughter and grandchildren are, or his wikipedia page so I don't know anything about her at the moment, or if that is actually her in the picture. If it is her, I'm not sure that she was married to him at the time, so she may have been Maureen Hunter when photographed. If you have any verifiable clarifications, please get in touch.

While I don't have any specific details about the September 25th performance, Elvis' second single Good Rockin' Tonight was released that day, so it's conceivable that Elvis, Scotty, and Bill played it and the B-Side, I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine, that night at the Eagle's Nest.
